Book Search?
Hiya all, just extending my search again as have no idea how to do it, it says click on link and then doesn’t extend it…anyhoo….the book must have been about late 70s-early 80s in hardback, about a city girl sent to her scottish relatives during school holidays, not wanting to, has cousin elspeth who tries to get her interest by taking her hill walking and such like, they go up to this cave where she hears a voice but doesn’t let on. she proceeds to go up a few times and its the voice of her grandfather who’s trying to tell her a family secret. she does faint near the end and her parents come back to see how she is and confirm this secret. Cover was quite reddish in tone, red ghost? red cave? was kids horror, scared me at time though probably not scary as grown-up. Any help much appreciated.
I’ve got another suggestion, culled from abebooks’ search engine. The book “Miss Ghost” by Ruth M. Arthur has a main character named Elspeth, but she goes by Elphie. The summary: Elphie’s life is filled with rejection until she meets Miss Ghost who had had problems not unlike her own. The cover isn’t exceptionally reddish, though. It was published in 1979, and you can see the cover at amazon: http://www.amazon.com/Miss-Ghost-Ruth-M-Arthur/dp/0689307020/?tag=24680e-20
Here’s one more possibility. I don’t see any reference to any supernatural themes, but it does have a cousin named Elspeth and one who was an explorer. “The Three Elizabeths” by Jessie Margaret Page. Cousins who had to go to live with a guardian (Auntie Mac?). The girls were all called Elizabeth but they were known as Elizabeth (eldest), Elspeth (middle) and Beth (youngest). Beth wanted to be an explorer, Elspeth was good at literature and the literature teacher was called Dr Stott. It was set in Scotland and I think they moved to a tenement and made friends with the local girls. At the end, Auntie Mac gets engaged/married.
I’ll keep looking!
